In brief
The task of Aarhus University is to conduct research and provide research-based education at the highest international level. This means, in other words, that we carry out research at the boundaries of human knowledge – between what we know and what we do not know. We attach importance to extending people’s knowledge of scientific methods and results and to exchanging knowledge and expertise with the surrounding society.

2006 was a ground-breaking year for Aarhus University. On 1 January 2007, the merger between Aarhus University, the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences, the National Environmental Research Institute and the Aarhus School of Business came into force. In August 2006, the Business and Engineering College of Herning merged with Aarhus University. Finally, there are ongoing negotiations with the Danish University of Education, which may also merge with Aarhus University.

As one of Denmark’s three super universities, the new Aarhus University will be a heavyweight establishment as an international and effective centre of education and knowledge. The staff covers 6,200 persons’ work in one year, and the University has the capacity to educate approximately 30,000 students and 2,000 PhD-students. The University carries out research of the highest international quality, with a volume that corresponds to about 25 % of the total publicly funded research in Denmark.

Aarhus University is aware of its regional and national role. The mergers make it possible to target the activities of the University very effectively within research, education, public service and transfer of knowledge to all sectors in society. The five “old” faculties, the new Agricultural Faculty, the Aarhus School of Business and the National Environmental Research Institute must all contribute to this – especially through actual cooperation across the spectrum of subjects.

With the mergers, the new Aarhus University covers units throughout Denmark from Foulum in Jutland to Roskilde in Zealand. The original Aarhus University is concentrated on a large campus area close to the centre of Aarhus. The buildings, which belong to the architectural cannon of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and the central location make the University in Aarhus one of the most attractive student environments in Northern Europe.

Why we have chosen to provide a team for Grundfos Challenge
The interaction between highly specialized knowledge in a limited field and general knowledge of a broad field constitutes the challenge of Grundfos Challenge. It is also the challenge that our candidates will face when they are employed in either private companies or the public sector after graduation. That is why we have accepted the invitation and the challenge of participating in Grundfos Challenge.
