Design Engineer Offers Hydronic Recipe for “Unerring Reliability”
Tim Rosen, P.E. and one of the owners of Avon, Colorado-based Concept Mechanical, states that large, high-end residential hydronic systems are usually more complex than most commercial systems of equal size.
He and his two partners, Dave Slick and Matt Kelsall, routinely install mechanical systems for homes in the 5,000 to 15,000 square foot range. Many of the residences also incorporate large snow melt systems which must be ready to perform throughout several months where snow isn't measured in inches, but feet.
“Our customers want absolute, unerring reliability and performance to match that of a finely-crafted European car, “he said. ”And, they don't want to see or hear the mechanical equipment, not even in a garage or basement.” To meet these needs, Concept has developed a hydronic recipe for demanding clients that always includes Grundfos multi-speed circulators.
One recent installation involved the use of several VersaFlo circulators. The 11,000 s.f. home in Beaver Creek, CO, received an extensive radiant heat system with a snow-melt driveway. The mechanical work alone had a price-tag of $450,000. Said Tim, “Our customers are willing to pay for good workmanship, but they want absolutely no compromise. Using the best equipment isn't necessarily a change of necessity. We use the best products because our reputation, and their peace of mind, are on the line.”
“We use a primary-secondary piping arrangement with individual pumps dedicated to project energy loads for most of our jobs,” stated Rosen. “For the smaller loads, and for remote circulation, we've standardized on their SuperBrute pump line. For the larger loads, we've selected Grundfos VersaFlo pumps for their three-speed adaptability, and remarkably quiet operation.”
Concept particularly likes the ability to match a multi-speed pump to its need. Grundfos' new, expanded line of wet rotor VersaFlo's have two or three different performance curves and are well suited for later system retrofits or changes.
With a recipe like that, it´s no surprise that most of their customers are eager to refer Concept Mechanical to others.
